Many of us have a defining moment in our lives. Mine is the fire that roared through my neighborhood and destroyed my home on June 27, 1990, at 6:35 p.m. I think I will forever mark time as BF and AF—before the fire and after the fire.

I was in India researching Daughters of Hope, the first of my 10 international books, when I came face-to-face with the reality of modern-day slavery. Jyoti, a young teenager, was showing me through her home--a village built on a huge garbage dump.
